Jim , I have a 59 Tbird and a 66 Tbird both convertibles ( had to throw that in)

It sounds like to me the pump in the carb is not working properly or either the choke needs adjusting. Just a thought.  It is truly hard to diagnose a problem over a computer. I would try there first.

Jim, In short it's all carbureted vehicals  using  todays gas. When shut down after after a good run the worm float bowl percolates the available fuel out leaving it low and eventually dry . Installing an electric pump in series back at the tank aera and wired to operat just for starting purposes is about the only fix. Careful thow the wrong style pump can set up to much of a restriction  for the stock pump to suck right. I have done a few in the past and probly should come up with a kit .  That is my Take.---PROOST

PS. All of the above anwers do apply!

if memories serves the fuel pump is a duel diaphraphm . they had a tendency to get weak and leak down . the restart is ok because the system is running at a higher rpm then starting. rebuilding the mech. pump may be the problem solver

Have you tried one hard pump on the accelerator and then hit the ignition switch? I have a 70 Torino with a new 600 cfm Edlebrock. The one hard pump is the only way it starts, no matter how many days it has been. If I don't do this, I can crank it all day without starting it.

I would also check that the choke is working properly. Also, if you're timing is slightly out, it might make the old Bird hard to start.
